The Essence of Ambiance

Serendipity.
Stacey wasn't planning on doing any bridals for her wedding, but we decided to get together when she did the practice up do for her wedding day. It was a rainy Sunday so we couldn't shoot outside. Thank heaven for neighbors with photo equipment! We started out the LATE evening shoot with a dark background held up with a makeshift background stand (PVC pipe), a harsh tungsten light, my SD600 and a reflector. It was great until just after we changed the background and then the light bulb burnt out... and we were left with the 100 watt light bulb in the standing lamp that sat in the corner of the room. I started shooting with long shutter speeds and requests for Stacey to hold as still as possible. We got quite a few shots with the ambiant light of the room! The "misfortune" that the burnt out light created was really just a fun challenge to whip out some creativity! The second image demonstrates best the available yellow light in the room---thanks to Adobe PhotoshopCS2 and RAW files the white balance was easily manipulated to get the soft white light in the first image.

A Saturday Morning

Friday evening I went to dinner with a childhood friend. She showed me these fun shots of her and her husband and I couldn't resist but copy the idea---self descriptive words on pieces of paper---stuck on you with tape or merely held in your hands. As Melissa and I drove to our destination for her photoshoot I started asking her what words she thought best described her. We came up with a couple fun ones like creative, musical, and book worm---and then of course the one that said "SINGLE". As a spin off I had to scribble down..."Waiting for YOU!" I loved Melissa's confidence with being single and her ability to shout it out to the world that she is indeed, waiting for her special someone. While comfortable living my single "free" life, I often find myself in a space of discomfort with it. As much of an oxymoron as that is...most times I am filled with great wonder, desire and longing to really find and be found by my own special someone.

On Location...

I'm in love with sloppy borders and photoshop actions! While at WPPI I gave in and bought some cool borders by Kevin Kubota. He's amazing and the borders are so much fun. I've used three different ones here on pictures of my friend Scot with one-T. He needed some headshots done for his budding acting career! These shots were taken in my backyard in Riverton, UT. Nothing beats shooting on location more than your own backyard. My favorite shot overall has to be Scot kissing his huge muscles---it's so him. Be careful not to get lost in his incredible eyes!
